Keep in mind, however, that siege defenders still have a pretty impressive advantage. Sometimes it even works to put a unit of light infantry on a ladder positioned as far on the flank as possible to try to make a run for the city center so the defender has to break their formation, but this isn't always effective so use with caution. I also usually have an extra battering ram, which I bring up right behind my main battering ram so that if the first one catches fire, I don't have to march all the way back to get the second one. First, by hitting multiple points on the walls I gain some small degree of maneuverability and reduce choke points on my own units, by being selective about towers vs ladders I engage archers as quickly as possible which reduces my casualties from shooting, I also gain a quick foothold with my light infantry which allows them to flank the more heavily defended points on the walls. So I put my heaviest infantry on towers and send them against the defender's heaviest infantry on the walls, while my spear infantry on ladders go after undefended spots on the wall or spots defended by only archers. Ladders, on the other hand, will get troops on the walls much faster. Towers put more of your troops on the wall at once, meaning your guys won't get owned the minute they step off like they will with ladders. Each length of wall between towers has a couple of spots on it where you can put towers or ladders. Hit as many points on the walls as you can. When I do a siege, I take the extra few turns to put a piece of siege equipment on all or almost all of my units. For me this isn't really an option because I love to command the battles! If you are more interested in empire management you could auto-resolve your siege battles, which will reduce your casualties considerably.
